The Year's Best Week to Buy Just Ended / Here's What It Means for You

Realtor.com just named September 27 through October 3 the best week of the year to buy a home. That week is now behind us but the numbers behind it are worth your attention, because the conditions that made it the "best week" haven't gone anywhere.

Here's what their data showed:

• About 32% more homes on the market than at the start of the year

• List prices roughly 3.5% below the seasonal peak that’s around $14,000 off the national high

• Buyer competition way down from the spring frenzy

The calendar week may be over, but more inventory plus softer prices adds up to something buyers haven't had all year: “negotiation room”. Sellers are more willing to talk, and you're not fighting ten other offers for the same house.
